It\u2019s unavoidable. It also requires a\ndifferent style of driving to that suitable on dry roads and, considering we\u2019re\nall hurtling around in big metal boxes, that style of driving is called <em>cautious<\/em>.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAlways drive defensively,\u201d you\nmay remember your driving instructor intoning in the dim, dark past. Whether\nyou\u2019re in a deluge or a sprinkle, this should be your mantra. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are 8 tips for driving in\nthe rain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. <strong>Check your tread<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This applies to all driving\nconditions, but never is it more pertinent than in the rain. The tread on your\ntyres are channels through which water is dispersed; travelling at 100km\/h,\nyour tyres may have to disperse up to 9 litres of water a second. If your tyres\nare too worn and the tread is too shallow, the water can become sandwiched\nbetween the road and the rubber, and you lose traction. This means\nyour car has literally been lifted up off the road by the water, you lose\ncontrol and begin to slide. Steering will become lighter and road noise will\ndecrease. Aquaplaning usually lasts only a few seconds, but that few seconds\ncan seem a lifetime. In this situation, it\u2019s hard not to panic. What you want\nto do is avoid braking harshly, slowly decrease the pressure on the\naccelerator, and avoid making sharp turns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Wait until conditions improve<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Seems obvious, but the safest\nform of driving in the rain is not driving at all. No doubt, there are\noccasions when we need to be on the road, or it was dry when we set out and we\nget caught in a shower. However, sometimes there is no reason why our errands\ncan\u2019t be delayed an hour or two, or even put off for the day. The fewer cars on\nthe road in wet weather, the safer we all are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Make sure your lights and wipers are working<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A heavy downpour dramatically\ndecreases visibility and hampers our ability to judge distances between our\nvehicle and others on the road. Headlights and brake lights are an absolute\nmust when driving in the rain, so make sure they\u2019re on and functioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s only when it starts raining\nthat you realise the poor condition of your windscreen wipers. Worn rubber can\nleave patches of water on the windscreen that reduce visibility, and worn\nwipers can even scratch the glass. Always check the state of your wipers before\nyou drive so you don\u2019t get caught out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Slow down<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Cautious and defensive driving\nmeans slowing down and maintaining a greater distance between you and other\nvehicles. Drive less than the speed limit, and maintain a greater distance\nbetween you and the car in front. Choose a landmark and make sure 4 seconds\nelapse between them passing it and you. On wet roads, it can take twice as long\nto stop. And when you break, do it early and gently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6. Avoid pools of water<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Every summer when it gets hot,\nwe\u2019re all reminded not to jump into rivers or lakes if the depth is unknown.\nYou could cause yourself serious injury. The same applies to cars. The depth of\npuddles is impossible to determine, especially when the water is muddy (which\nit almost always is). That puddle could be concealing a decent pothole, which\nwould seriously damage a wheel or the suspension. Having said that, don\u2019t\nswerve; if you can\u2019t avoid it, brake with control and traverse it slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. <strong>When rain gets really heavy, PULL OVER<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In a deluge, it doesn\u2019t matter\nhow fast our windscreen wipers swoosh back and forth, they can\u2019t displace\nenough water to maintain visibility. In this situation, you must pull over. When\nit\u2019s really heavy, you can literally see a tide of water washing over the road;\nimagine how difficult it is for your tyres to displace that much fluid and\nmaintain traction. Don\u2019t risk it. If there is no shoulder on which to pull\nover, reduce your speed dramatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>8. Demist your windscreen<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If it\u2019s raining, it\u2019s often cold.\nIn these situations, your warm, moisture-laden breath will condense on the windshield\nin front of you and leave it opaque. Your air-conditioner will stop this from\nhappening. A lot of cars have a demister button, which simply directs the air\nconditioning onto the windscreen. Familiarise yourself with these buttons so\nyou don\u2019t find yourself searching for them and driving at the same time.
