Wait \u2013 don\u2019t go\nout and check. Off the top of your head. Can you at least name the brand? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t worry \u2013 most motorists couldn\u2019t. It\u2019s a curious thing\nthat we know so little about that which is most responsible for keeping us safe\nwhen we\u2019re driving about. Of course, at Eastern Tyres, it\u2019s a different story.\nWe live and breathe tyres, and, yes, we have our favourite. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Continental.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s why. Simply put, their quality is unsurpassable. They\ncome as standard on one in three European cars (including BMWs), and they just\nkeep taking out the top awards. Since 2007, out of 513 tests carried out in\nEurope, they\u2019ve won an extraordinary 422. That\u2019s a whopping 82%. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now we can add another. The Continental PremiumContact 6 has just been awarded first place in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whichcar.com.au\/features\/wheels-tyre-test\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">2020 Wheels Tyre Test<\/a>. We thought this would be a great opportunity to take a look at what the experts want to see when putting tyres through their paces. Not only was Continental up against other top brands, it was fitted to a mid-sized SUV, one of the most popular car types on the road today. So the results are relevant to the real world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Slalom Test<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rapid direction change is a very effective way to determine\nhow well a tyre grips. In a matter of seconds (six, to be precise), the\nContinental PremiumContact was switched from full lateral load in either\ndirection six times. Apart from grip, this test also speaks to the build\nquality of the tyre. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Out of ten competitors, the PremiumContact came second,\npipped at the post by \u2026 another Continental tyre, the UltraContact UC6. Both\nwere considered the best tyre by some margin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Dry Braking Test<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>How quickly you stop after slamming on the brakes isn\u2019t only\ndown to your brakes and ABS. Tyres play a massive part. In this test, the\nPremiumContact pulled up more than five metres shorter than some of its\ncompetitors, and did so with better and more consistent feel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Dry Cornering<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The tyres are seriously put through their paces in this\nstage. Two 90-degree corners and a 50km\/h constant radius circle. This is all\nabout tyre tenacity and understanding how well they can cope with repeated\nextremes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You guessed it: the PremiumContact took first place, with\nthe test driver declaring that \u201ceven when you leant on the tyre, it never felt\nlike it was going to let go\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Wet Braking<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the scariest situations for all drivers is finding\nthemselves needing to slam on the brakes in the wet.&nbsp; This is where you really notice the\ndifference between a good quality tyre and its run-of-the-mill cousin. In the\ndry braking test, the gap between the best and the worst was 6.87 metres; in\nthe wet, 12.4. That\u2019s three SUVs nose to tail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But you needn\u2019t worry if you\u2019re sitting on PremiumContacts:\nthey were less than a metre off matching their dry braking distance. Come hail\nor shine, they\u2019ll pull you up in time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Wet Cornering<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tyre compound and tread pattern are what counts when\ncornering safely in the wet. The PremiumContact was among the quickest tested,\nsticking like glue to the bitumen and doing everything competently, with the\nbest feel from a driver\u2019s point of view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tyre Noise<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Not a safety issue, but certainly a comfort one. In a\ncountry that sprawls, long distances on tyres that send buckets of white noise\ninto the cabin can cut any trip short. If you want any chance of hearing the\nlyrics on Bob Dylan\u2019s new album, then the PremiumContact is what you\u2019ll want\nfitted. It\u2019s a testament to Continental\u2019s engineers that they\u2019re able to\nproduce a tyre that grips better than any other and is also the quietest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Consistency is the name of the game<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A tyre that excels at one or two of the above categories\nisn\u2019t worth much. Considering that these tyres were put through tests they\u2019re\nlikely to face at some stage in the real world, you need a tyre that is\ncompetent in all categories. That\u2019s why the Continental PremiumContact 6 took\nout overall winner, with a percentage of 99.3, nearly three per cent higher\nthan the runner-up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the test driver noted, \u201c[the Continental] felt like the\nbest tyre by some margin \u2026 it did everything really well \u2026 super consistent everywhere\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enough said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since 2007, out of 513 tests carried out in Europe, they\u2019ve won an extraordinary 422.
