Humans are living, breathing contradictions. Look around.\nThere are people with facemasks hanging from an ear so they can puff on a\ncigarette, those who order a salad from McDonalds, those who order strong\ndecafs, and the special few who buy a Tesla and then fit it with cheap tyres. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s akin to Usain Bolt slipping his size 13s into a\ntwenty-dollar pair of runners. Teslas appeal to us for a number of reasons, but\ndriving these advanced technological machines on the wrong tyres can negate their\nmost desirable attributes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tyres Matter<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re the first to admit we\u2019re a touch biased, but tyres are\nimportant. Far more important than the average car owner thinks. When we\u2019re in\nthe market for a new car, we\u2019ll read reviews and take note of how particular\nmodels handle, how quickly they stop, how quiet the cabin is, and so on. What\nwe sometimes don\u2019t realise \u2013 and what nearly all reviewers fail to acknowledge\n\u2013 is that a lot of how cars behave and sound is down to the tyres they sit on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Electric cars are steadily growing in popularity as the\ntechnology improves and infrastructure adjusts to accommodate them. One selling\npoint that has been around since they first appeared on the scene, though, is\nhow quiet they can be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Combustion engines are made up of parts that love producing\nnoise \u2013 pistons, air valves, gear mesh, fuel injection pumps, cylinders,\nexhausts, fans. These parts aren\u2019t present in electric cars, which is why\nthey\u2019re so quiet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s difficult to appreciate how noisy traditional\ncombustion engine cars are until you go for a drive in a Tesla. It\u2019s like a\nBuddhist retreat on wheels \u2013 if those wheels are the right ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You haven\u2019t skimped\non the car, so don\u2019t skimp on the tyres<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Recently, we were fortunate enough to go for a drive in a\nTesla \u2013 and found that famous quiet drive had disappeared. The reason? Cheap\ntyres. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like most things in life, you take the good with the bad. A\npositive attribute usually comes with a drawback. Because Tesla engines are so\nquiet, road noise is far more noticeable inside the cabin than with traditional\ncombustion engine cars. This means that the excessive noise generated by cheap\ntyres is amplified inside a Tesla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Going for the most expensive tyres, though, isn\u2019t the\nsolution. While you want to avoid cheap tyres, you also want to aim for the\nmost appropriate<\/em> tyres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ve done our research, and determined that Continental and\nMichelin make the quietest tyres that don\u2019t compromise on grip. In fact,\nContinental produces a tyre that comes equipped with a foam membrane,\nspecifically used to dampen noise. It has a marked impact on making a quiet\ntyre even quieter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, road noise can have a significant impact on\ncombustion cars, too. You notice it particularly when driving on a freeway that\nhas stretches of different surfaces, or newer and older patches of bitumen. The\nnoise noticeably changes in the cabin when moving from one to the other, which\nis down to the friction created between the tyre and the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, these quiet tyres aren\u2019t only appropriate for Teslas,\nbut all cars. Next time you fork out for a new vehicle (especially something\npremium like a Tesla) don\u2019t skimp on the tyres. The world has enough\ncontradictions as it is.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
