Despite this, most car owners don\u2019t\npay it much mind; it\u2019s just something to be checked at the usual 10,000km\ntune-up. Unfortunately, by the time 10,000km has swung round, your engine\u2019s oil\nmay no longer be doing an adequate job. When this happens, there\u2019s not a\ncomponent of your engine that won\u2019t be affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What does engine oil\ndo?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Without getting bogged down in the nitty-gritty, this is how\nyour car manages to get you from A to B: Expanding combustion gases push a\npiston, which in turn rotates a crankshaft, and, through a system of gears in\nthe powertrain, rotates the wheels. Basically, your car\u2019s engine is full of\nmoving parts, all of which are touching something else. Science tells us that\nmovement causes friction, which causes heat. Too much heat causes damage, which\nis why we use oil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rub your hands together and you\u2019ll find they get warm very\nquickly. Put some oil on your hands (or soap) and rub them together, and the\nheat generated is far less. The lubricating nature of engine oil keeps the\nengine cool (relatively speaking) and slows down the wear and tear of\ncomponents as they move against one another. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why does engine oil\nneed to be replaced?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Engine oil operates in a tough working environment and, over\ntime, becomes diluted and contaminated. On a cold start-up, petrol will\nactually enter and mix with the engine oil, thinning it out and inhibiting its\nability to lubricate. It also has to contend with contamination from water\nvapour and blow-by gases generated by combustion engines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on how you drive, this can be a problem. Properly\nwarmed engine oil reduces the rate of contamination, but it takes 20 kilometres\nto actually reach the desired temperatures. That\u2019s right \u2013 20 kilometres. So,\nfor most people, the commute to work or school or the supermarket is saturating\nthe oil with contaminants and not giving the oil enough time to heat and then\nvaporise the nasties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you start your car, oil needs to be able to move\nquickly to all the moving parts and protectively coat them \u2013 which is nigh on\nimpossible when it\u2019s thick with contaminants. In fact, the damage you can cause\nyour engine due to poor quality oil usually occurs on start-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And even once it manages to coat all the moving parts, the\noil is so contaminated that it\u2019s a much less effective lubricant. Your engine\nwill wear faster. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>So how often should\nthe oil be replaced?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about what you use your car for. If more than half\nyour journeys are less than 20 kilometres, then you should have the oil changed\naround 5,000 kilometres, or every six months. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other factors that affect oil are dusty roads, sustained\nhigh speeds and a constantly laden car. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And don\u2019t think you can get around this by simply topping up\nthe old oil with some fresh oil. This doesn\u2019t remove the contaminants, which\nare the cause of serious damage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today\u2019s engines last for around 200,000 kilometres. A well-maintained engine, however, can last for as long as 500,000 kilometres. That\u2019s right \u2013 more than double. A regular oil change is a major influence on the life of your engine.
